Walton County
was created
by the Lottery
Act of 1818,
and was
organized
in 1819.
Georgia's
46th county
was named
for George
Walton,
a signer
of the Declaration
of Independence,
who also
served as
governor
of Georgia
and as a
U.S. Senator.
Good Hope
was chartered
by an Act
of the Georgia
General
Assembly
in 1905.
While there
is apparently
no "official"
records
of it's
establishment.
It is believed
to have
been in
existence
since 1830,
when a settlement
referred
to now as
Old Good
Hope was
located
about one-mile
east on
Hwy. 86
from our
present
location.
Those rough-hewn
log buildings served
as post office,
general store and
militia headquarters.
In the 1890's Mr.
John Nunnally built
a store in what
is now Good Hope
and slowly the population
center moved from
old Good Hope to
New Good Hope.
Among the early settlers of the community were the families of Richardson,
Hale, Sheats, Bassett,
Long, Thompson,
Malcom,
Carlton, Michael,
Poss, Robison, Harris,
Green, Peters, Adcock,
Stuart, Prather,
and Chandler.
There was until
the early 1940's
a railroad serving
the city with the
Green County Railroad
Providing the service.
Like wise there
was a grist mill,
flour mill, blacksmith
shop, barber shop,
cotton gin, cannery,
city jail and warehouses.
Some early churches
of the community
are Jack's Creek
Primitive Baptist
Church, Bethel Baptist,
Good Hope Baptist,
and Good Hope Christian.
